Beginner’s Guide To Anime #1: What Is Anime?

Hi everyone and welcome to my new post series: Beginner’s Guide To Anime.

Like a lot of mediums of entertainment, Anime has a vast amount of content and it’s hard to know where to begin. I see too many people on the internet that don’t give anime a go because of this so I’m hoping to lower that number with this series of posts.

But before I start throwing series at you to watch, I’m going to educate you all on what anime is.

What Is Anime?

Anime to put it most basically, is the word for Japanese cartoons.

When most people think of anime they immediately think of spiky haired characters with huge eyes. Which you may be surprised to learn is untrue for 90 percent of it.

Anime are the highest quality ‘cartoons’ you will ever find with some of the best animation, art and soundtracks that will make you angry, sad, happy or all emotions at once.

Anime began around the start of the 20th century but became mainstream in Japan around the 1980s with series such as Dragon Ball Z and Gundam (which even beginners should have heard of). Nowadays, it’s becoming more and more common to be an anime fan in the western world which is great for people like me (and possibly you one day).

Isn’t Anime Just For Kids?

No. I don’t blame you for thinking this as a lot of people think the same thing about anime. Anime is a medium that caters for all ages.

You have anime for young boys and girls, teen boys and girls and adult men and women. You’d be surprised at how mature and adult some anime can be and that’s why a lot of older people (this is coming from a teenager) enjoy anime just as much if not more than kids.

How Do I Start Watching Anime?

Well that’s where this post ends and the next one begins. Next post will be all about how to choose anime, a list of starter anime for each genre and where you can watch all of this anime.

I hope you all enjoyed this post, even if you aren’t new to anime you might have liked it anyway.

Finally, if you have any friends that want to get into anime then be sure to show them this post and the ones to follow.

  1. I think the biggest mistake that people assume about anime is that it only follows one narrative. I never understood people who said stuff like “I don’t like anime cause I watched (insert random anime here)”. It’s important to know that it’s a medium that can showcase all kinds of stories much like live action films. Saying “I don’t like movies because I saw transformers and it’s not my cup of tea” would be ridiculous wouldn’t it? There are all kinds of anime for fans of everything. Even for horror fans like me. I just finished watching “Devilman crybaby” a few days ago and it definitely is one of the best things I’ve seen in ages.
